Mission:
Kuumba Academy is an innovative learning environment focused on the whole child in grades kindergarten through Fifth grade. Kuumba Academy directors, staff and parents share a core belief that parents are the primary educators of their children. Parents in partnership with teachers and administrators believe that every child can maximize their learning potential given the opportunity to do so.
Goals:
The Kuumba Academy Charter School is dedicated to the development of each student's potential for learning in a positive environment. Our teachers believe that every child can excel given the proper motivation and community involvement. The curriculum integrates individualized learning and social growth with academics, the arts, technology, foreign language, and the study of world culture.
Kuumba Academy Charter School is the right choice for parents who seek an academic environment that values parents as key partners in the education of their children, honors the individuality and unique learning style of each student, utilizes the arts as a tool for academic learning, and supports multicultural school experiences. Kuumba Academy believes that children have positive responses to a learning process that challenges their capacity for learning and captures their imagination. The school's philosophy is based, in part, on the work of Howard Gardner of Harvard University. Gardner's work promotes the concept that students have multiple modes of intelligence and thus can and should learn in many different ways. Kuumba Academy's core educational belief is that parents are the primary educators of their children. Together the parents, teachers and children create a circle of learning that is designed to result in high academic achievement.
The Arts program is made possible, in part, by a grant from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency dedicated to nuturing and supporting the arts in Delaware, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts.
Kuumba Academy Charter School is a Vision 2015 school.
The Rodel Foundation Delaware co-invested with the Foundation for Science and Math Education to pilot the International Math Curriculum, also known as Singapore Math, in Kuumba Academy.
eMINTS Delaware - Sponsored at Kuumba Academy by the Delaware Center for Educational Technology, and the Delaware Department of Education to improve instructional Strategies and student academic achievement (including technology literacy.)
