A Message To All Kuumba Families

For the 2012-2013 School Year

          Welcome to Kuumba Academy!  Kuumba Academy is an exceptional educational community that embraces cultural awareness and empowers student to achieve integrated academic and artistic excellence.  We are committed to becoming the highest performing charter school in Delaware with an unwavering commitment to advance student achievement, build extraordinary character, instill uncompromising respect, and develop strong work ethic.

            We envision a dynamic learning environment where teachers, families, students and community partners work together in pursuit of excellence in the cultivation of curiosity, creativity, cross-cultural appreciation and collaboration. Kuumba Academy encourages excellence through an intense focus on math, reading, writing, social studies, science, and social emotional learning. We pay explicit attention to the creation of a caring, nurturing community that provides, in partnership with families, abundant individual support and encouragement to each and every student. We believe that every learner is unique and we strive to accommodate and inspire the special interests and talents in each of our students through the delivery of an innovative and rigorous educational program.  True to its name, Kuumba Academy offers a stimulating, innovative learning environment for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.

UNIFORM SALES:  Uniforms will be available for puchase at the school begining on Monday August 20th at 9:00am.  
 
EMERGENCY DATA & HEALTH INFORMATION:  You should have received an Emergency Data & Health Information form for your student in the mail.  Please complete the form and return to the school on the first day of school. 
 
SCHOOL ALERTS:  KACS will utilize electronic email and a telephone broadcast system to send school announcements and to notify KACS families of unplanned events and emergencies, such as early dismissals, school cancellations, and school delays.  To ensure we have the most up-to-date contact information, please complete the School Alert form and return the form with your child on the first day of school. 
 
GET INVOLVED!  One of Kuumba's core values is that parents are partners in the educational process.  Our Parent Committment form encourages all parents to volunteer 10 hours each year.  There are a variety of ways that you can be involved -- volunteer in the classroom, chaperone field trips, organize a club, or coach a sport!  Alternatively, you might consider becoming more active in one of the following groups:
  • PTA – parents and staff host a variety of fund-raising and community building events to support KACS
  • Breakfast/lunch time volunteers
  • P.O.S.S.E. (Parents Offering Support Services in Education) – parents volunteer one hour each week to provide reading or math support to small groups of students.  Training is provided!


JOIN THE PTA! The school PTA is growing. Please come and join so that you can be an active member of the Kuumba Academy Community.  The list of activities that you can be a part of grows daily. WE NEED YOU!! A nominal fee of $10.00 is required for you to join. The first PTA meeting for 2012 will be held  on September 19th at 5:30pm.  We hope to see  you there!
