Reading ASSIST® Institute
Student Selection

Student Identification for the volunteer tutoring programs is the responsibility of the school.
  • The Ideal student candidate for RAPS Intervention, (Reading ASSIST for Primary Students) is significantly behind in the areas of written language and reading. These would include students preferably in grades 1-3, who are experiencing difficulty acquiring the following skills.
    • Letter identfication, recognition and / or sequencing
    • Phonological and phonemic awareness
    • Sound-symbol associations
    • Decoding and encoding
  • Students for Kindergarten Intervention, a distinct and separate volunteer program, are tutored in small groups of three. A maximum of nine students, grouped by ability, can be tutored by a single Kindergarten Intervention team. These kindergarten students should be experiencing difficulty in the areas of:
    • Phonological and phonemic awareness
    • Sound-symbol associations
    • Oral language development
Questions regarding student selection or the volunteer tutoring program should be directed to Sue McGrath at 302-425-4080 or smcgrath@readingassist.org
